Shinji and Hatsue
Now that you're about halfway through The Sound of Waves, it's time for you to gather your thoughts about the story and the main characters, Pick either Shinji or Hatsue and explain what you think of him or her. What three adjectives would you use to describe him or her? What has been his/her biggest challenge so far? How did he/she handle it? What does that tell us about him/her? Is he/she likable? Why or why not? What might the author be telling us about people in general, through him/her? Your response should be 10-12 thorough sentences.

ReplyDeleteI would describe Shinji as kind, selfless and hardworking. He has been through many challenges, currently the biggest one he is facing is being with Hauste. He is trying to maintain a relationship with her, but, it being his first time dating and the fact that they must keep there love for each other a secret is quite hard. Shinji is managing by being extra careful and considerate toward Hatsue. In addition, they don't spend much time alone with the other. So Shinji and Hatsue agreed that they would meet in the old watch tower every stormy day. This shows that Shinji is a very patience and careful person who truly loves Hatsue. These qualities are part of why Shinji is a likable person. He is also modest, nice, caring, protective and nurturing when it comes to his family. However, he is also quite, reserved, not very smart (academically speaking) and he isn't the best at picking up social queues. I believe that the author is trying to express that children from poorer families have to provide for their family staring from too young an age. Lastly he might have been expressing that despite all this, you can still find true love!
DeleteFor Hatsue, I think she is a normal teenage girl. She is interested in more freedom. Three adjectives to describe her are honest, caring, and open. Her biggest challenge so far has been living up to everybody else's expectations. I feel like even though she is herself, she also feels pressure to make herself differently. She handles it by trying to force herself to be herself, it is hard, but she is working on it. This tells us that she is trying for Shinji, and she kind of forgets her social status with him. Hatsue is definitely a likable person. Shinji likes her, as well as everybody else on the island. I would try to be friends with her if I were in the book. She also seems friendly. I feel like the author is saying that the island is semi-peaceful and he is a sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteI think Shinji is humble, obedient and is dedicated to being the bread winner for his family. I think Shinji's main challenges would be accomplishing his dreams of owning a boat. I think even if its a reasonable goal its still very hard to do while supporting your family. I think another main challenge of Shinji is in a way proving himself to Hatsue, and learning how to be comfortable around her.It might feel a little hopeless with the class difference and social pressure on the island but I don't think Shinji will give up. I think that Shinji works hard to keep his dream alive and if he becomes a better fisher it will be easy to accomplish. I think Shinji is slowly starting to become more together around Hatsue and make better impressions on her. Its becoming clear that he really cares about her. This shows us that not only is Shinji working toward his dreams, he's also very capable of learning, and maturing around Hatsue. I think Shinji is very likable, and good but he has almost no flaws which makes him a bit dull. I think the author really wants us to route for Shinji throughout the story. I think Shinji symbolizes youth becuase he comes off as very naive, I also think he symbolizes hope.
ReplyDeleteShinji is a strong, likable, skilled young man/fisherman, who supports his family a great deal. I believe Shinji's biggest challenge has been the death of his father. Shinji's father was a fisherman like Shinji and died in a truly tragic, yet admiring way. Shinji handled the loss of his father by fishing whenever he could, which added up to almost 11 hours each day. This kind of commitment shows how dedicated he is to his father, his mother and brother, the people of Uta-Jima, and to fishing and the sea. I find Shinji to be a very likable young man. He works hard to earn money to put food on the table for his family and allows them to live a potentially good life. Shinji puts his family, the island, and Hatsue always before himself, its like without them his needs and desires won't matter much. Shinji sees the people of the island as friends but also as enemies. These people either care about Shinji and want to help him succeed or deal with him and wait until the day he'll finally leave the island..
ReplyDeleteI believe that Shinji is a strong, independent, modest young man who is faced with many responsibilities on a daily basis. Shinji's largest challenge so far has been the challenge of reaching out to Hatsue and becoming close. Throughout most of the book Shinji's mind has been concentrated on Hatsue and her beauty. By the time he finally talks to her he isn't actually completely ready to talk to her and stumbles a little bit with his words. He is a little bit too friendly but thankful Hatsue is not intimidated by this and is intrigued with him. What you can tell from his over friendly nature is that Shinji was extremely nervous. From that you can gather that he has not had many experiences with girls as one would hope. To me I would think this is the first he time he has truly liked a girl and pursued her and he is not accustom to the nervousness one receives. Generally Shinji to me is a very likable person that is well-known by the islanders and liked. In the book it doesn't speak of any enemies Shinji may have on the island and from that you can conclude that he is most likely either a generally liked person or a person who stays off the radar.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to pick three adjectives to describe Shinji, it would generous, realistic, and thoughtful. He is generous because he is constantly thinking about other people and trying to give back to the people who have been kind to him in his life. He also became his father’s role within his family; he brings home money, food and is constantly looking over his 12 year old brother and even his mother. I think that he is realistic because when Shinji tells Hatsue his goals, he said that he wanted to have a shipping business with his brother. This seems like a very modest and attainable goal. I think that he is thoughtful because he saved up for his younger brother’s school trip, then he brought a special pink shell for Hatsue, and he has a quiet, thinking personality. Shinji’s biggest challenge is to be with Hatsue, since are there class differences between them, and he is inexperienced with new relationships. Although this is a challenge, I don’t believe that Shinji will give up hope and this shows that he is determined and is a strong character. He reaches for his goals and doesn’t give up half way. Shinji is likable because he is honest and doesn’t try to start conflict. Perhaps the author wants the reader to connect with Shinji and to show in contrast that the some people on the island can be judgmental and unforgiving. Throughout the story, the reader wants Shinji to succeed, partly because he has to overcome obstacles and the odds are against him.
ReplyDeleteThree adjectives that describe Shinji would be amiable, hardworking, and caring. I think that Shinji is amiable because of his generosity towards everybody. Inside his body, he might hate somebody. However, he will never show anger like that; instead he will act kind and keep his feelings inside. The way Shinji is committed to get out on a boat all day, work all day, not complain, go out in bad whether, never give up, and provide food and money for his family makes me think to believe Shinji is hardworking. Lastly, I would describe Shinji as caring because of his affections toward Hatsue, and his love and responsibility towards his brother and his mother. Even though Shinji is all of these three adjectives, it does not mean he cannot face challenges. Shinji's greatest challenge so far has definitely been dealing with Hatsue. Not only does he have to deal with her, but he has to deal with Yasuo, Chiyoko, and their relationship in general. He has handled it pretty well, sometimes he has urges that he resists, which keeps them together. He sees her moderately, and everyday learns how to be less obsessed with her. This tells us that this is obviously the first love in his life that he has taken to a "higher level". Adding on, Shinji is very likable because he is smart and honest. Maybe the author wants the reader to understand Shinji very well. To understand he is a figure that will go very far in life, and be a happy and healthy human being.
ReplyDeleteI would describe Shinji as humble, kind, and caring. Shinji's biggest challenge so far is having to keep his relationship with Hatsue a secret. This is hard not because he wants to brag about it, but because he wants to be with Hatsue, but cannot. This is made even harder by Uncle Teru making Hatsue not go out during the hours that Shinji is on the island. He handles this by concentrating on his work, and communicating with Hatsue in secret. He is a very likable person. This is because he is a kind and humble person, two characteristics which people find pleasing. The author might be showing the readers the "ideal" person, to show them how to act and be.
ReplyDeleteI think Shinji is a good person. I would describe him as giving. Also, Shinji is athletic from fishing. He is a very shy person. His biggest challenge was getting Hatsue to notice him. He is shy, so not many people notice him. He solved that when he went to the lighthouse. Hatsue was there too. He is likable because he is nice person and he is good to his family. I think the author is trying to show that they were this kind of person or wanted to be this kind of person.
ReplyDeleteThe sound of waves is a really in depth book. Shinji'sand Hatsue's relationship is really taking off. Though its been kind of hard and awkward at times they become closer and closer every time. Shinji has really big doable dreams for his future. He wants to have his own fishing boat and make sure that his mom and himself are taken care of. Deep down he has Hatsue in mind for his future. Shinji is a very strong, smart, quiet boy that works very hard for his family.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to describe Shinji in three words, it would be humble, caring, and passionate. Everything Shinji does, wether he likes it or not, he does it with a lot of passion. I probably would guess that waking up early and going fishing is not the best thing in the world but for Shinji it is something he looks forward in doing. He is passionate about fishing because he knows its his only way out. He knows he has to do it for his father and for his family. He does it with passion. From picking a sea shell off the ground for a gift to giving all his earnings to his mother, Shinji cares a lot for the people around him. He saved money so his little brother could go on the school field trip. Shinji cares about his family so much that he not only gives his mother all he earns but he is responsible for bringing him food. Shinji also cares about the little things such as not to scare Hatsue because it was dark out and he did not want her getting hurt. Everything about Shinji comes with a great amount of humility. Shinji does not brag about having Hatsue by his side nor does he want people to find out. Shinji is so humble that he was worried about asking for too much in his prayers. Overall, Shinji has a lot of many great qualities and they all tie to the fact that he has a tremendous responsibility.
ReplyDeleteThree word that I would use to describe Shinji are hardworking, kind, and modest. The fact that he is hardworking is seen every time he is working out on the sea. He puts his all into his work so that he can support his family. That leads into my second point. He is a very kind person. He works as hard as he can to support his family. He gives every penny that he earns to his mother and brings her fish too.He also is very kind. An example of this is that he has never been mean to anyone in the entire story this far. The only time he was ever rude to someone was when he was staring at Hatsue, and that was only because he had never seen anything like her before. The last adjective that I would use to describe him is that he is very modest. Up to this point in the story he has not bragged once. He never even asks for credit for things he has done. Shinji is a real role model on the island.
